In Ophelia, the mysterious Ophelia is not an attachment to Hamlet, but the center around which all other elements spin, death, ghost, king, and population, all of them puppets, cardboard giants or dwarves. Only Ophelia is real, played by director Peter Schumann’s grandson and frequent B&P collaborator, 15-year-old Ira Karp.
The Apocalypse Rally Show will be featuring New York concert pianist Idith Korman.

The following week Bread & Puppet will present The Apocalypse Defiance Circus, a rollicking spectacle of protest and celebration. The 60-minute show addresses the heart of the current moment with a bright barrage of acts spanning many moods, from slapstick to the sublime, all powered by a riotous brass band. Help is provided by stilt-dancers, blue horses, paper maché clouds and tigers. Building on the tradition of the Circus as spectacle for the people, performed in the round, and somehow encompassing the ecstasy, sadness and absurdity of the world as a whole, Bread & Puppet’s circuses have become an iconic form in their own right, 51 years running!

COVID Protocol:
As of September 26th, 2022, we are no longer requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination for our audience upon entry.
Bread and Puppet requires the audience to wear masks for all performances.

B&P coming to a city near you!

Dear Friends,

I write with news that Bread & Puppet has embarked on a National Tour with two new shows, The Apocalypse Defiance Circus and The University of Majd. We hope that we may have the opportunity to play in a town or city near you!

We’ve been on the road for two weeks, performing for audiences in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, and New York. This week, we have begun our westward plunge, with shows in Western New York and Ohio. The tour will take us across the midwest, through the great plains and the rocky mountain states, down the west coast, back through the southwest, the Gulf Coast and the deep south, up through Appalachia, in order to deliver us to New York City in time for our traditional December run at Theater for the New City.
A detailed list of currently confirmed shows follows below, and please check the touring schedule page of the B&P website frequently to catch updates regarding new bookings!
Last, we are still looking for bookings (and housing) in the following cities and regions:
Salt Lake City (October 16)
San Francisco/ Bay Area (October 28)
Los Angeles/San Diego/SoCal (November 3-6)
Central/Southern Arizona (November 11-12)
Amarillo/Lubbock/North Texas (November 17)
Oklahoma (November 18)
Nashville or other Central Tennessee (December 4)
Louisville (December 6)
Pittsburgh or other Western Pennsylvania (December 8)
Baltimore (December 9)
Philadelphia (December 10-11).
Note: all dates Tennessee and onward would require indoor venues, due to the advancing season!
Please email Paul Bedard ([email protected]) with contacts!
We hope to see many of you this fall, and appreciate any help getting the word out!
All best,
Josh Krugman, for the Touring Company

Political Leaf Peeping at B&P on September 25th at 2pm

Bread & Puppet welcomes everyone to our Annual Political Leaf Peeping! We invite you to celebrate the end of the summer and the beginning of the glorious fall landscape with an afternoon of music, puppet shows and potato pancakes. The event will take place Sunday, September 25th at the Bread & Puppet farm in Glover.

There will be a Shape Note sing in front of the museum at 2pm, and those that would like to participate are invited to join a rehearsal at 1pm. The sing will be followed by side shows performed by friends, comrades, and neighbors. After sideshows, the audience is invited into the Paper Mache Cathedral to see The Apocalypse Trauma Show, featuring New York concert pianist Idith Korman. To celebrate the brilliant autumn season, there will be a ceremonious ribbon cutting to open the North East Kingdom landscape. Finally, director Peter Schumann will serve his traditional potato pancakes with fresh applesauce from our apple trees.

Before and after the performances, the audience is invited to visit the world famous Bread & Puppet Museum to see one of the largest collections of puppets in the world, and also to peruse the newest printed posters and banners from the Bread and Puppet Press. An exhibit by Jonas Fricke, Saturn Ladyheart abd Adam Cook, OH WHAT AN EXCITING TIME TO BE ALIVE!, will be on view in the Woodshed Gallery. A selection of Peter Schumann’s newest art, painted on discarded bedsheets, will be on display across the Bread and Puppet property.

Masks are required for the indoor performance in the Paper Mache Cathedral, as well as inside the museum. Social distancing and mask-wearing are strongly recommended when occupying outdoor spaces. This event is not preticketed. Donations are welcome, and no one is turned away for lack of funds. All events take place at the Bread & Puppet farm, 753 Heights Rd., Glover VT.
