Burt Porter Sings at Bread&Puppet

BURT PORTER SINGS AT BREAD AND PUPPET

Poets Burt Porter and Lindsay Knowlton will present a poetry reading on Sunday, August 5th at 5:45 after our Circus&Pageant, in the Paper Maché Cathedral behind the B&P Museum.

Burt taught English at Lyndon Institute for many years and was head of the English Department there. His poems are in traditional rhythm-and-rhyming style, include many sonnets, and cover a broad range of subjects from country living skills and hardships to classical mythology, from Northeast Kingdom nature and seasons to Shakespeare’s legacy.
Burt has published six books of poetry, the latest in 2014 is “Rhymes from the North Country”. An accomplished musician on guitar, fiddle and banjo, Burt set many of his poems and the poetry of others to music, performing at fairs and festivals all over Vermont. For over forty years he has played at Bread&Puppet’s Museum Open House, and given poetry readings solo and with poets Galway Kinnell and Lindsay Knowlton.

Insurrection Mass at Goddard College

Bread and Puppet performs an Insurrection Mass  with Funeral March for a Rotten Idea on Monday July 30th, at 7:30pm, at Goddard College’s Haybarn Theatre

In this show Bread and Puppet, under the direction of the “insurrection preacher”, Peter Schumann, appropriates the form of a Catholic funeral mass as a ritual byebye to a rotten idea in our culture or politics that is badly in need of burial. The Mass starts with a Dada “opening prayer” sufficient dislodge a small sign reading “closed” from a paper maché ear, and continues in equally absurd and poignant fashion. The Mass also features the gates of hell and first-person testimonials by humanitarian aid workers on the US-Mexico border.

After the show, there will be bread and aioli served. Admission is by donation.

There is also an exhibition of Peter Schumann’s giant woodcut banners on both floors of the Eliot Pratt Library of Goddard College. In the upstairs Art Gallery is a series of works, entitled Post-Apocalypse for the ¾ Empire, inspired by the Albrecht Dürer’s
woodcuts illustrating the apocalypse. Downstairs is an exhibition of banners for the Possibilitarian Uprising. Regular hours for the library are 9 – 4 pm, M-F. The library will be open until 9pm on Monday, July 30th.
