A bit about our summer circus: This summer Bread & Puppet will once again proudly present our traditional summer Circus, a brand-new show in the tradition of the iconic Bread & Puppet circuses that began at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont in 1970. As usual, the show will draw on traditional circus tropes as well as beloved Bread & Puppet characters and iconography to draw attention to the urgent issues of the day. Stilt dancers, paper maché beasts of all sizes and a riotous brass band make a raucous, colorful spectacle of protest and celebration.

The show, says Schumann, is “in response to our totally unresurrected capitalist situation…our culture’s unwillingness to recognize Mother Earth’s revolt against our civilization. Since we earthlings do not live up to our earthling obligations, we need resurrection circuses to yell against our own stupidity.”

After the show we will serve our famous sourdough rye bread with aioli, and Bread & Puppet’s “Cheap Art” – books, posters, postcards, pamphlets and banners from the Bread & Puppet Press – will be for sale at the Circus Field Store as well as in the Bread & Puppet Museum, right across Rt. 122.

We hope to see you this summer!

Sincerely,

Bread & Puppet Theater

ALL SHOWS will continue Rain or Shine but will Cancel for Flooding.

Friends, travelers and neighbors.

Bread and Puppet will continue to put on our performances Every Saturday and Sunday at 3 PM rain or shine. But, due to the unprecedented amount of rain that has been hitting Vermont will have to cancel for major Flooding. A major issue we face is that our parking lot, which is mainly a grassy field, keeps getting compromised from all of the consistent rain and flooding. We are currently working on improving our drainage infrastructure and coming up with creative ideas to tackle this issue.

Any tickets purchased for any Cancelled performance will be accepted for all future circuses and performances, no check-in or logistical work required.
If anyone is in need of a refund, please feel free to email [email protected]

We are sincerely sorry for any inconvenience and disappointment this might cause in the future . We hope that the weather will lighten up as the summer goes on and this doesn’t continue to be a problem.

Thank You

Kompass String Quartet:  Every Saturday July 15th – August 26th at 2pm in the Paper Mache Cathedral

Come join us for an afternoon of chamber music and puppetry every Saturday of the summer! This event is free, no tickets required and is a prologue to our 3pm show!

Beginning at 2 PM, the KOMPASS String Quartet will be performing Charlie Morrow’s recomposition of Beethoven’s ‘Große Fuge’ – The Grand Fugue, one of the 6 late string quartets, which were composed when Beethoven suffered from complete hearing loss. Morrow emphasizes the temporal contradictions of the original piece by adding what he calls 7 lifts – parts of the Beethoven piece stretched in time.

The performance will happen in our Paper Mache Cathedral and will run for 40 minutes, followed by a short 20 minutes break before our 3 p.m. Idiots of the World Unite Against the Idiot System show and our 4:30 p.m. Mother Dirt Church Services, held in the same venue. We request that visitors stay for the entirety of the KOMPASS quartet’s piece, in order to respect the intensity of the work and craft of the performers. We will not be admitting late comers.

The members of the string quartet are Jessica Gehring and Jade Schoolcraft on violin, Matthew Ryan on viola and Victoria Lin on cello. We are so excited to have them!

The University of Majd Every Friday at 6:30pm through the rest of the summer!

Bread & Puppet to premier new show, University of Majd, this August. Majd Ziadeh, a young Palestinian man, was detained at age 19 with all the other men in his building, tortured, sentenced to 30 years in an Israeli military prison in 2002. Thanks to the work of lawyers and activists, his sentence was commuted and he was released earlier this year. University highlights the conditions that allowed for Majd’s unjust imprisonment, and celebrates his release.

The play draws its title from the fact that many Palestinians refer to time spent in Israeli prisons, with dark irony, as “University,” a grim rite of passage for a significant percentage of young Palestinians.

University of Majd will play Friday evenings this August at 6:30 p.m. outside The Paper Maché Cathedral at Bread & Puppet Theater.

Admission to “The University of Majd” will be by suggested donation of $10-$25 at the door. Tickets will not be sold online for this show.

No one will be turned away due to a lack of funds!

In case of rain the show will be performed inside the Cathedral with limited seating capacity (110 seats) and a strict masking required policy.

The Theory Of Our Needs will be at 6:30pm every Friday through the rest of the summer!

The Theory Of Our Needs will be at 6:30pm every Friday through the rest of the summer!

The Theory of Our Needs is about the fake and real needs as we inherit them and as we are educated to them. Our childish capacity to see no distinction between need and want has been sold into slavery by our merchant culture. Singing the hymn of need and dancing pragmatic utilitarianism into the moment-at-hand is reserved for toddlers only. The mature homo sapiens has lost that intelligence. We need dirt on our feet and whistles to drive our brain from its prison into the void.

Admission to “The Theory of Our Needs” will be by suggested donation of $10-$25 at the door.

No one will be turned away due to a lack of funds!

In case of rain the show will be performed inside the Cathedral with limited seating capacity (110 seats) and a strict masking required policy.
