join us in a participatory pageant as we recreate and reimagine ancient spring rituals to honor and bless the sun, the animals, plants, and earth that sustain us. Through song and silence, movement and stillness, we will ban everything bad and welcome in the spring. We’ll sing powerful and beautiful traditional Eastern European songs to call in the birds and the spring. We will end with a celebratory picnic of sourdough crepes, round and yellow like the sun. Join us as we enact a ritual of beauty and hope in defiance of the cold and bloodthirsty logic of the ruling class and the bleakness of the current moment!
We invite audience to come in costume:
as bears for a protective circle dance, (Romanian tradition)
OR* to wear red, to call on the power of the sun (Slavic tradition)
Musical instruments, especially bells and whistles, welcome.
The event will take place in the circus field. Expect snow, rain, and mud and dress accordingly! In case of extreme weather, we will hold it in the Dirt Floor Cathedral.
12 : learn songs and dances
1pm: Ritual begins
2 or 2:30: Sourdough crepes, bread and aioli at the bread house
Note: Rituals at Bread and Puppet are not Bread and Puppet productions, and may not have any puppets in them. These rituals are lead by Peter Schumann’s daughter Maria Schumann, a farmer, singer and folklorist from Greensboro Vermont. She has been creating seasonal outdoor, song based, community ceremonies for the last 15 years, drawing inspiration from folk traditions and her Bread and Puppet childhood.
