THE CIRCUS AND PAGEANT will continue Rain or Shine but will Cancel for Flooding

Friends, travelers and neighbors.

Bread and Puppet will continue to put on our performances Every Saturday and Sunday at 3 PM rain or shine. But, due to the unprecedented amount of rain that has been hitting Vermont will have to cancel for Flooding. A major issue we face is that our parking lot, which is mainly a grassy field, keeps getting compromised from all of the consistent rain and flooding. We are currently working on improving our drainage infrastructure and coming up with creative ideas to tackle this issue.

Any tickets purchased for any Cancelled performance will be accepted for all future circuses and performances, no check-in or logistical work required.
If anyone is in need of a refund, please feel free to email [email protected]

We are sincerely sorry for any inconvenience and disappointment this might cause in the future . We hope that the weather will lighten up as the summer goes on and this doesn’t continue to be a problem.

Thank You

Applications for the Spring Printshop Focused Apprenticeship now open!!

Come spend your summer in rural Vermont, performing shows on a working farm with a 60-year-old political puppet theater!!

Location: Glover, Vermont, USA

Duration: 2 weeks, from May 24 – June 4. Apprentices are expected to be able to participate for the full two weeks.

Cost: $150 per week, for a total of $300.

Printers, artists, dreamers, painters, makers of all kinds are invited to make work with us!

Graphic images chiseled into masonite, printed and painted on cloth, and paper have been an integral part of Bread & Puppet Theater’s shows since the very beginning in the early sixties. Peter Schumann, Bread & Puppet’s founder, director and artist, created and continues to create, the contents, both pictures and texts of nearly all our publications and posters. Our emphasis is on utilitarian uses of art, for such vital activities as celebration, decoration, information, argumentation, rumination and puppetry!

We are committed to making Bread & Puppet a space of thriving and belonging for people of all ages, ethnicities, gender identities, nationalities and backgrounds. Not having printing or theater experience and/or not being familiar with the work of Bread and Puppet should not deter you from applying.

ALL applicants will be considered regardless of their ability to pay. We understand that our fees are too high for many people who might want to apply. Therefore, if you are selected for the apprenticeship program, we will work with your financial situation to enable you to attend this program. If you can afford to pay the full price, or have access to outside funding, your support helps us offer fee reductions for those who need it.

Please note that the focus of the apprenticeship program is specific to the work being made and not a particular syllabus: We are not a school and we do not conduct classes in printmaking, but provide a learning experience based on the work that the Bread and Puppet Press produces: relief printing woodcuts, letterpress, painting posters and banners.

The apprenticeship program is an intensive and often intense communal living and working experience. To be a B&P apprentice is to be “thrown into” the ongoing life and productions of the community and to learn by engaging with this often chaotic but also highly structured environment. Apprentices need to be self-motivated and adaptable. There will be opportunities to work on your personal projects outside of the working day. Please bring any of your own materials for this.

B&P coming to a city near you!

Dear Friends,

I write with news that Bread & Puppet has embarked on a National Tour with two new shows, The Apocalypse Defiance Circus and The University of Majd. We hope that we may have the opportunity to play in a town or city near you!

We’ve been on the road for two weeks, performing for audiences in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, and New York. This week, we have begun our westward plunge, with shows in Western New York and Ohio. The tour will take us across the midwest, through the great plains and the rocky mountain states, down the west coast, back through the southwest, the Gulf Coast and the deep south, up through Appalachia, in order to deliver us to New York City in time for our traditional December run at Theater for the New City.
A detailed list of currently confirmed shows follows below, and please check the touring schedule page of the B&P website frequently to catch updates regarding new bookings!
Last, we are still looking for bookings (and housing) in the following cities and regions:
Salt Lake City (October 16)
San Francisco/ Bay Area (October 28)
Los Angeles/San Diego/SoCal (November 3-6)
Central/Southern Arizona (November 11-12)
Amarillo/Lubbock/North Texas (November 17)
Oklahoma (November 18)
Nashville or other Central Tennessee (December 4)
Louisville (December 6)
Pittsburgh or other Western Pennsylvania (December 8)
Baltimore (December 9)
Philadelphia (December 10-11).
Note: all dates Tennessee and onward would require indoor venues, due to the advancing season!
Please email Paul Bedard ([email protected]) with contacts!
We hope to see many of you this fall, and appreciate any help getting the word out!
All best,
Josh Krugman, for the Touring Company

Last chance to see the University of Majd and the Apocalypse Defiance Circus

Friday August 26th at 6:30pm

University of Majd outside the Bread & Puppet Dirt Floor Cathedral.

University of Majd tells the tale of Majd Ziadeh, a young Palestinian man, was detained at age 19 with all the other men in his building, tortured, sentenced to 30 years in an Israeli military prison in 2002. Thanks to the work of lawyers and activists, his sentence was commuted and he was released earlier this year. University highlights the conditions that allowed for Majd’s unjust imprisonment, and celebrates his release.

The play draws its title from the fact that many Palestinians refer to time spent in Israeli prisons, with dark irony, as “University,” a grim rite of passage for a significant percentage of young Palestinians.

University of Majd will play Friday evenings this August at 6:30 p.m. outside The Paper Maché Cathedral at Bread & Puppet Theater.

You can purchase tickets in our Ticketing tab or put money in the hat! $10-$25 suggested donation, no one turned away for lack of funds.

Sunday August 28th at 3pm

Saturday September 3rd at 3pm

The Apocalypse Defiance Circus in the Bread & Puppet Circus Field.

Bread & Puppet presents Our Domestic Resurrection Circus and Pageant, a brand new show in the tradition of the iconic Bread & Puppet Circuses that began at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont in 1970.  As usual, the show will draw on traditional circus tropes and familiar Bread and Puppet iconography to draw attention to the urgent issues of the day. Stilt dancers, paper maché beasts of all sizes and a riotous brass band make a raucous, colorful spectacle of protest and celebration.

Sideshows at 2pm Throughout the Parking Lot and in front of the Pine Forest

Circus at 3pm in the Circus Ring

Pageant at 4:10pm  in the Pageant Field. **This year’s Pageant is a collaboration with Steve Paxton**

Guest Performances on 8/28 at 5:30pm  by former Poet Laureate of Belfast, Maine Toussaint St. Negritude

Free Fresh Sourdough Bread & Puppets Giveaway Every Friday

Stop by at the Bread & Puppet farm every Friday from 1-2pm for free fresh-baked sourdough bread and handmade puppets by the puppeteers.   The farm is located at 753 Heights Rd. Glover, Vermont.

Bread is pulled from Peter’s clay oven just before we open to ensure a steaming fresh loaf for every visitor (while supplies last.) This bread has the nick-name “Schumann Light” as it’s a combination of fresh ground rye berry flour with artisan white flour and Peter’s century old sourdough culture.  We have setup a drive-thru scenario where you can stay in your car and follow signage to pull into our parking loop.  After getting your bread and puppet feel free to find parking in our regular lot and peruse the Museum.

Please practice covid-safety with masks and social distance at all times on the premises.  We hope to see you soon!
